Based on Manuel Puig's 1976 novel, the film follows a political prisoner who connects with his cellmate, who recounts a Hollywood musical starring his idol, Ingrid Luna (played by Lopez).
The festival lineup also includes "If I Had Legs I'd Kick You," starring Rose Byrne, Conan O'Brien, and A$AP Rocky, about a Long Island mother facing challenges. Other premieres include "Jimpa" with Olivia Colman and John Lithgow, "Train Dreams" with Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones, and "Rebuilding" with Josh O'Connor and Meghann Fahy.
Documentaries like "Sally," about astronaut Sally Ride, and "Sly Lives!," about the band Sly and the Family Stone, will also debut. The Spotlight program will feature "One to One: John & Yoko," exploring John Lennon and Yoko Ono's time in Greenwich Village.
The Sundance Film Festival runs from January 23 to February 2 in Park City, Utah.
