Domestically, "Sonic" sped ahead, adding $38 million to its coffers, bringing its two-week total to $137.6 million. The film, based on the popular video game, features the blue blur and his friends facing off against Shadow the Hedgehog, voiced by Keanu Reeves.
However, "Mufasa" was hot on Sonic's heels, earning $37.1 million over the weekend and reaching a two-week total of $113.5 million. This Disney prequel delves into the backstory of Simba's father and his relationship with his brother, Scar.
Internationally, "Mufasa" roared to victory, taking in $77.1 million compared to "Sonic's" $74 million. Globally, "Mufasa" leads with $327.9 million, while "Sonic" trails with $211.5 million.
Meanwhile, "Nosferatu" crept up the charts, adding $21.1 million to its total, reaching $40.3 million in just four days. This gothic horror film, directed by Robert Eggers, stars Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult as a couple tormented by the vampire Count Orlok, played by Bill Skarsgard.
"Wicked," the musical starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, also had a strong showing, earning $19.4 million, boosted by sing-along screenings.
"Moana 2" continued its successful voyage, adding $18.2 million to its total. The animated adventure features Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson reprising their roles.
Rounding out the top 10 were "A Complete Unknown," a Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet ($11.6 million); "Babygirl," an erotic thriller with Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson ($4.3 million); "Gladiator II," directed by Ridley Scott ($4.1 million); "Homestead" ($3.1 million); and "The Fire Inside" ($2 million).
