Se7en's shocking ending: The truth about the box revealed

David Fincher's 1995 thriller, Se7en, is turning 30. To celebrate, the film is being re-released in IMAX and 4K UHD.

The film's ending, where Detective Mills (Brad Pitt) discovers the contents of a box left by serial killer John Doe (Kevin Spacey), has been the subject of much speculation over the years.

Fincher finally clarifies what was really inside the box. Rumors suggested it was a prosthetic head of Mills' wife, Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow). Fincher dismisses this, stating it was "entirely ridiculous." He explains that the box contained a weighted bag and a blood-soaked wig to simulate the weight and appearance of a severed head.

Fincher emphasizes the power of Morgan Freeman's performance in conveying the horror of the unseen. Interestingly, the film almost had a different ending. Original director Jeremiah Chechik wanted to remove the shocking climax. However, Fincher insisted on keeping the original ending when he took over the project.

The re-release boasts several special features, including deleted scenes, alternate endings, and commentaries from the cast and crew. Fans can relive the chilling masterpiece in theaters starting January 3rd and own it on 4K UHD from January 7th.
