Randy Moss fights back tears in emotional ESPN comeback

The Hall of Fame wide receiver, known for his charisma both on and off the field, was visibly emotional as colleagues and former teammates welcomed him back with a heartfelt video tribute.

An emotional welcome back

During Sunday’s broadcast, Moss was honored with a special "Welcome Home" video from ESPN. The tribute featured messages from NFL greats such as Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and Justin Jefferson, as well as NBA legend Kevin Garnett. By the end of the segment, Moss, holding back tears, acknowledged the overwhelming support he had received.

"You already know it's the big crybaby here, man," Moss said, wiping his eyes. "Y'all, I couldn't do it alone. It's been hard, but I got a lot of love and a lot of people believe in me. So I'm happy to be here, man."

Messages of support from NFL icons

Tom Brady, who played alongside Moss for three seasons with the New England Patriots, led the tribute, saying, "We've all missed you. For as great as you were on the field, you've impressed and inspired us even more with what you’ve done off the field. You're a brother to me, I love you more than anything in this world, and it's so great to have you back."

Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson also shared his admiration, telling Moss, "I was so inspired by your story as a kid growing up, looking up to you, and wanting to be just like you. We’re all right behind you."

Meanwhile, Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons added, "We're just happy to see you back on the screen."

Marie Green, widow of former Vikings coach Denny Green, delivered a touching message: "Denny always said, 'Faith, family, football.' And now we're going to add 'fight,' because Randy, you are fighting, and you will win."

Overcoming adversity

Moss took a leave of absence from ESPN in December 2024 after revealing he had undergone surgery for cancer. Doctors discovered a cancerous mass in his bile duct, leading to an extensive six-hour procedure. He later shared that his treatment would continue with chemotherapy and radiation but remained determined to return to work.

"My goal is to get back on that television with my team," Moss stated at the time.

A lasting legacy

Since joining ESPN as an analyst in 2016, Moss has remained a fan favorite, bringing his signature energy and deep football knowledge to broadcasts. Prior to his media career, he dominated the NFL for 14 seasons, playing for teams including the Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, and San Francisco 49ers. He still holds the record for the most touchdown receptions in a single season and is widely regarded as one of the greatest wide receivers of all time.

Now, after battling one of the toughest fights of his life, Moss is back doing what he loves—talking football. His return to NFL Countdown is not just a win for ESPN, but a testament to his resilience and unwavering spirit.
