Notch's hypothetical Minecraft 2 aims to reclaim the game's original vision

Markus 'Notch' Persson, the creator of Minecraft, has sparked excitement among fans by hinting at a potential sequel to the beloved sandbox game.

In a recent Twitter poll, Persson asked his followers what kind of game he should develop next, offering two options: a roguelike dungeon crawler or a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft.

The response was overwhelming, with over 77% of the 235,000 voters expressing their desire for a Minecraft sequel. Persson acknowledged the results, stating that he is "loving working on games again" and is considering a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft.

While details remain scarce, Persson assured fans that his project would not infringe on the work of Mojang Studios and Microsoft, who currently own and develop Minecraft. He emphasized that his game would be a "new original game of the same type as Minecraft" and would have a different title.

Persson's announcement has rekindled nostalgia for the early days of Minecraft and raised anticipation for what he might create next. The original Minecraft, which Persson began developing in 2009, became a global phenomenon, selling over 300 million copies and captivating millions of players worldwide.

In 2014, Persson sold his stake in Mojang and the Minecraft IP to Microsoft for $2.5 billion. Since then, Mojang has continued to update and expand Minecraft, ensuring its enduring popularity.

Fans eager to see what Persson's next creation will be can follow his Twitter poll and await further updates.
