Nintendo announces unexpected support for aging Wii console

It may come as a surprise, but the Nintendo Wii is about to get fresh support for a beloved game series in 2025.

The Wii was officially discontinued over a decade ago and has seen virtually no new game releases since. Yet, the platform remains popular, largely due to the sheer number of consoles sold globally during its lifespan. Now, a third-party manufacturer is aiming to extend the Wii's relevance with a new peripheral.

Hyperkin, a company specializing in gaming peripherals, has revealed the Hyper Strummer guitar controller for the Nintendo Wii. Compatible with most titles in the Guitar Hero and Rock Band series, the Hyper Strummer is a wireless guitar controller that improves upon Hyperkin's previous designs. This updated version will be available for purchase this week on January 8th at a retail price of $76.99.

For those unfamiliar, Rock Band and Guitar Hero games on the Nintendo Wii continue to enjoy a dedicated fanbase in 2025. Although both franchises have been largely dormant for some time, Wii owners have kept them alive. Games like Guitar Hero: Metallica, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, and Guitar Hero 5 still command prices between $20 and $40. Original guitar and drum controllers can even fetch over $100 in the resale market, explaining why Hyperkin continues to produce new controllers like the Hyper Strummer.

Despite the enduring popularity of Rock Band and Guitar Hero, new installments in either franchise seem unlikely in the near future. And even if they do happen, a Nintendo Wii release is certainly off the table. So, for those who want to keep jamming on their Wii, the Hyper Strummer might be the perfect solution.
