New Underrail 2 trailer impresses with old-School Fallout gameplay

Dive into the depths with the trailer for Underrail 2: Infusion, a post-apocalyptic sequel that captures the essence of the original Fallout.

The isometric post-apocalyptic adventure, UnderRail, is getting a sequel in the form of UnderRail 2: Infusion. Developer Stygian Software has revealed over 20 minutes of alpha footage, showcasing a new fast-paced combat system that evokes strong Fallout vibes.

In a world ravaged by disaster, where do you go? You seek refuge underground, like a radiant-resistant Womble, carving out an existence in the world's metro stations. This is the premise behind the apocalyptic game Underrail, and now its developer is diligently working on the sequel, UnderRail 2: Infusion.

This setting might ring a bell for fans of the Metro 2033 games, but while they embraced a first-person perspective, UnderRail 2 retains the isometric viewpoint of its predecessor, and based on the early Alpha trailer, it's shaping up to be quite impressive. Initially conceived as a sidequel back in 2020, it has since evolved into a full-fledged sequel.

A significant upgrade from UnderRail, UnderRail 2 not only boasts enhanced visuals compared to the original, as aesthetically pleasing as post-apocalyptic tunnels and platforms can be, but also features revamped combat. While still largely turn-based, actions are now significantly quicker, potentially increasing the pace of your subterranean expeditions.

Despite this change, UnderRail 2 undeniably evokes memories of old-school Fallout, before Bethesda transitioned the series to 3D. Beyond the viewpoint, there's the thrill of seeing the damage inflicted on your enemies, and the sinking feeling when a mutated creature deals a critical blow.

In classic Fallout fashion, you can hoard seemingly useless items. Is that skull of any practical use now that its owner is deceased? Probably not, but that's no reason to leave it behind.

The trailer also highlights an impressive level of detail in object interactions. Instead of items simply appearing in your character's hands or not appearing at all, you can observe them reaching in and retrieving objects.

UnderRail 2 is still in its early stages of development, so it will be a while before we can experience it in its entirety. In the meantime, you can stay updated on its progress through Stygian's developer blogs.
