Meredith Vieira's husband, Richard Cohen, dies at 84

Richard Cohen, a journalist and husband of former "The View" co-host Meredith Vieira, passed away on Christmas Eve at the age of 76 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis, according to an announcement on "Today."

Cohen was surrounded by his loved ones during his final moments.

The couple, who were married for 38 years, had three children together: Benjamin, 36, Gabriel, 34, and Lily, 32. "Today" co-host Hoda Kotb shared that the family had gathered for Thanksgiving with concerns about Cohen's declining health, but were fortunate to spend a wonderful month with him before his passing. Savannah Guthrie, another "Today" co-host, mentioned that Vieira is currently in good spirits.

Guthrie described the couple as "the most fun and entertaining, irreverent, cool couple you could hang out with." In a 2019 interview with Yahoo Life, Cohen revealed that his father and paternal grandmother both had multiple sclerosis. He was diagnosed with the disease at 25. Cohen recalled experiencing early symptoms like dropping a coffee pot and falling off a curb, along with numbness in his leg. Despite the diagnosis, he remained physically active and initially denied the severity of his condition.

When Cohen met Vieira, he had been living with MS for a decade. He was upfront about his diagnosis early in their relationship. "She didn't blink," Cohen said of Vieira's reaction. Vieira explained her perspective to Yahoo Life, emphasizing that life is unpredictable and Cohen's diagnosis wasn't a deterrent for her.

Throughout their marriage, Vieira supported Cohen's career with CBS News and stood by him through two cancer diagnoses. Cohen authored several books about his health journey and became an advocate for those living with chronic illnesses. He believed in the importance of openness and honesty when dealing with health challenges.
