Meet Lana Ja’Rae: The 22-year-old queen making waves on RuPaul's Drag Race

Lana Ja’Rae, at just 22 years old, is already a standout in the New York City drag scene, and she’s now ready to take the world by storm as one of the queens on RuPaul’s Drag Race season 17.

Known for her fierce runway presence and unrelenting ambition, Lana is ready to show off her skills on the Main Stage.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lana explained how the show offers her the platform to showcase her fashion and performance talents, something she didn't have access to back in New York’s clubs, where she would perform without the chance to wear expensive outfits. "Now I have the opportunity to be given a platform to showcase looks and to model and to do what I love to do," Lana said. "So, I think people should look out for a lot of looks from me because, yeah, it’s kind of nasty."

Despite being the youngest queen in her season, Lana has already made a name for herself on the scene. Her style, inspired by iconic '90s supermodels like Naomi Campbell, is mesmerizing, and it caught the attention of her drag mother, RuPaul’s Drag Race season 15 queen Luxx Noir London. After spotting Lana at a local pageant, Luxx approached her and said, "You’re c--t, you’re going to be my drag daughter."

Entering the Werk Room, Lana was cautious, having seen how the fans treated Luxx for simply owning her excellence. But she was determined to give her best, recognizing that every contestant in the room was equally talented. "I was terrified of that," Lana admitted. "I just did the best I could do and prayed that was enough. I was like, you know what, you look c--t today, and that’s amazing. You have to be at peace with that."

Lana’s background in theater and dance is another factor behind her success. Born in Oklahoma and raised in Texas, she was introduced to the stage early on and received her first big theatrical attention playing Agatha Trunchbull in a local production of Matilda, a role that stood out partly because of her "huge titties."

Now a part of the fashion elite in New York, Lana is ready to shine on Drag Race. She promises that season 17 will bring plenty of drama, strong performances, and memorable moments. "We can call you a bitch, but we love you, you know?" she says of her fellow queens. "There’s lots of drama, good performances, good challenges, good people — lots of beautiful people. What more could you ask for? The perfect package."

RuPaul's Drag Race season 17 airs Fridays at 8 p.m. on MTV.
