Macy Gray shows frustration after judges’ decision on The Masked Singer

Macy Gray had an unforgettable moment on the U.K. version of The Masked Singer when she stormed off the stage following the judges' decision to eliminate her.

Despite the majority of the panel correctly guessing her identity as the Toad in the Hole costume, her competitor in the Bear mask was favored, prompting Gray's dramatic exit.

Though visibly frustrated, Gray eventually returned to the stage for the customary post-reveal Q&A with host Joel Dommett. However, her responses were brief and lacked enthusiasm. When Dommett asked, "Did you have fun on the show?" she simply replied, "Yeah."

Dommett shared the moment on his Instagram, humorously captioning it with "Lol." During the interaction, Gray, who has had a long career in music, expressed her frustration with the situation. "You know, I've been singing for a long time, and now I'm a toad," she said.

Macy Gray’s third Masked Singer appearance

This appearance marks Gray’s third time participating in a version of The Masked Singer, a popular reality competition in which celebrities sing while disguised in elaborate costumes. The show originated in South Korea and has since been adapted worldwide. Gray previously appeared on the Australian version of the show, making it to episode six as the Atlantis character. She also competed in the American version’s 10th season as Sea Queen, making it to the finals and placing fourth behind Janel Parrish, John Schneider, and winner Ne-Yo.

After her unmasking on the U.K. version, Gray told the audience, "It's an awesome show, and it's always fun with the fans." Before leaving, she shared some advice: "Be good to yourselves, be good to each other, don't take no s--- off nobody."

Judge defends decision

The judging panel for The Masked Singer U.K. Season 6 includes Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall, Mo Gilligan, and Maya Jama. Dommett recently defended their decision to eliminate Gray in an interview with BBC Radio 2, explaining that while Gray is a music legend with a distinctive voice, the other contestant, still shrouded in mystery, was kept in the competition because their identity was still unknown.

Dommett expressed sympathy for Gray's reaction but also couldn’t help but find humor in the situation. "You can’t be vexed when you’re dressed as a toad," he joked. "I love Macy, she is incredible, but I’ve never witnessed anything more funny than a six-foot toad storming off. It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life."

This dramatic exit from Macy Gray added an unexpected twist to the latest episode of The Masked Singer, showing that even legends can have their off moments on stage.
