Lakers send D'Angelo Russell to Brooklyn in four-player trade

In a surprising turn of events, D'Angelo Russell is returning to the Brooklyn Nets. ESPN reported on Sunday that the Nets have acquired the guard from the Los Angeles Lakers.

The trade involves a package that includes Maxwell Lewis and three second-round picks going to Brooklyn along with Russell. In return, the Lakers will receive Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton.

This marks Russell's second stint with the Nets. He was initially drafted by the Lakers in 2015 but was traded to Brooklyn in 2017. After playing for the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves, he rejoined the Lakers in February 2023.

Russell's playing time under Lakers coach JJ Redick has decreased in recent months. His average minutes per game dropped from 30.6 in October to 25.2 in December.

So far this season, Russell has averaged 12.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.7 assists in 29 games. These figures fall below his career averages.

The trade also involves Maxwell Lewis, a 22-year-old small forward who has played limited minutes for the Lakers this season.

Dorian Finney-Smith, a 31-year-old forward, has been a consistent starter for the Nets this season. He averages 10.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Shake Milton, a 28-year-old guard, has averaged 7.4 points and 2.4 assists per game for the Nets this season.
