Hudson, who starred in the film alongside Anne Hathaway, shared on her podcast, "Sibling Revelry," that the initial script, penned by Casey Wilson and June Diane Raphael, was much more explicit. However, after Miramax was acquired by Fox, the studio pushed for a PG rating, diluting the original vision.
"We were ahead of the curve when it came to a very rated-R female comedy," Hudson lamented. She expressed frustration that the studio wasn't willing to take a chance on their raunchier concept, but later embraced a similar approach with Judd Apatow's "Bridesmaids."
Screenwriter Casey Wilson echoed Hudson's sentiment, stating, "We were ahead of the curve."
Hudson expressed a desire to share the original script with audiences, emphasizing its comedic brilliance. "I sometimes wish we could put out that original script because it was so deeply funny," she shared.
"Bride Wars" depicted the comedic fallout between two lifelong friends, Liv (Hudson) and Emma (Hathaway), whose dream weddings collide on the same day, sparking a hilarious rivalry.
In contrast, "Bridesmaids," released in 2011, explored the chaotic journey of a group of women navigating a bachelorette party and wedding preparations, earning acclaim for its bold and unapologetic humor.
