Jolie’s attorney, James Simon, confirmed to The Associated Press that the couple had reached an agreement. People magazine first reported the news of the settlement.
“Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt more than eight years ago,” Simon said in a statement. “She and the children vacated all properties they shared with Mr. Pitt, and since then, she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long, ongoing process that began eight years ago. To be honest, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this part is over.”
No court documents have been filed yet, and a judge will need to approve the agreement. An email sent to Pitt’s attorney late Monday night seeking comment was not immediately returned.
Jolie, 49, and Pitt, 61, were one of Hollywood’s most prominent couples for 12 years. The two Oscar winners share six children.
Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, following a flight from Europe where she claims Pitt was abusive towards her and their children. Pitt denies these allegations. A judge declared them divorced and single in 2019, but the division of assets and child custody remained to be settled.
A private judge hired by the couple to oversee the case made a decision soon after that granted equal custody of their children. However, Jolie filed to have him removed from the case due to an undisclosed conflict of interest. An appeals court agreed, the judge was removed, and the couple was forced to start over.
No details of the agreement were immediately disclosed, and the couple’s use of a private judge – an increasingly common practice among separating celebrities in recent years – has kept the proceedings largely confidential.
Some details have emerged through a separate lawsuit filed by Pitt, in which he claimed Jolie broke an agreement to sell him her half of a jointly owned French winery. The impact of the divorce agreement on this lawsuit remains unclear.
