The 58-year-old comedian noticed that Clarkson, 42, was barefoot during their interview and jokingly called attention to it, asking, "What is going on with the feet?"
Gaffigan then playfully speculated about why Clarkson had chosen to go shoeless, quipping, "I feel more grounded when I sing if I’m barefoot," adopting a higher-pitched voice. "I can feel the ground."
It turns out there was some truth to his playful teasing. Clarkson laughed and admitted, “The best part of that statement and how [much of a] tool [I sound] is it’s true. That’s what I actually say!”
While the Grammy winner confirmed she enjoys performing barefoot, she explained that the real reason behind ditching her heels was simply because her feet were hurting. “My feet hurt,” Clarkson revealed. “The stilettos I was supposed to wear today, I didn’t have enough middle fingers for it… so I just said no. I’ve never gone barefoot before, but that’s okay. That’s what we’re doing.”
Gaffigan, however, had a different view on the shoeless situation. "For me, first of all, I wouldn’t have my feet exposed because I respect the audience,” he commented. In response, Clarkson jokingly waved her legs in the air and replied, “And I don’t!”
Gaffigan also quipped that the footage of Clarkson going barefoot might draw in some unexpected viewers. “There’s a portion of the internet that’s going to love this show especially,” he teased. Clarkson responded with a laugh, “I’m gonna get a whole new fanbase.”
While Gaffigan’s comment about Clarkson’s bare feet may have been surprising, it’s not the first time the talk show host has gone without shoes. Clarkson is known to often go barefoot, especially while filming her "Kellyoke" segments, such as when she covered songs like Birdy’s "Quietly Yours" and The Revivalists’ "It Was A Sin."
