Female River Plate players released from jail after alleged racist incident

A court in Brazil has mandated the release of four women's soccer players from River Plate who were detained for allegedly making a racist gesture during a match.

Judge Fernando Oliveira Camargo ruled that the four athletes, Candela Díaz, Camila Duarte, Juana Cángaro, and Milagros Díaz, can leave jail but must stay in Brazil and appear in court monthly until the case is resolved.

The players were arrested on December 21st after a match against Grêmio in the Brazil Ladies' Cup. Video footage appears to show Candela Díaz making monkey gestures towards a ball boy.

Grêmio's players left the field in protest, and the match was eventually abandoned after the referee showed red cards to six River Plate players. Grêmio was awarded the win and went on to win the tournament.

The four River Plate players spent Christmas in a São Paulo jail. Their lawyer called the decision to arrest them "arbitrary" and accused the Brazilian judiciary of "sending a message."

Grêmio's coach said her players told her that River Plate players had previously called them "monkeys." Tournament organizers have vowed to ban any team involved in racist behavior in future events.

River Plate condemned the incident and said it would take disciplinary action against the players. The four players have not yet commented publicly on the case.

This incident is the latest in a series of racist incidents involving Argentinian soccer clubs, particularly in men's matches against Brazilian teams.
