However, a recent attempt to create an alternate ending has ignited further debate. On October 12th, 2024, a new X account, @jujutsunokaisen, declared their intention to rewrite the Jujutsu Kaisen ending from chapter 236 onwards.
Many fans were upset by Gojo's death in the original manga, despite the masterful handling of the scene. Chapter 236, where Gojo meets his allies at the airport and Sukuna acknowledges his foe, is considered a high point in the series. Yet, some readers remain dissatisfied, particularly with Gojo's demise.
One such reader decided to take matters into their own hands, crafting an alternate ending under the name "Jujutsu no Kaisen." This project, complete with a website and social media presence, released its first chapter on January 1st, 2025, to a wave of criticism. Fans have accused the project of disrespecting Gege Akutami's work and expressed outrage over the alleged use of AI and traced artwork from both official Jujutsu Kaisen and One Punch Man chapters, as well as fan art.
The website has currently released only one chapter, which largely follows the original storyline with some dialogue changes and a faster pace. The most notable alteration is the premature appearance of Sukuna's mouth on his stomach. A second part is expected soon, though no release date has been confirmed.
Anime YouTuber @ChibiReviews criticized the project on X, stating, "So that Jujutsu Kaisen fan ending got caught tracing not just from the original manga, but from Fan Artists and One Punch Man… What a way to start 2025."
A chorus of fans voiced similar opinions. User @TerravonRiegan responded, "Your frustration seems to stem solely from Gojo's demise, a plot point that aligns perfectly with both the narrative and the power dynamics at play. However, your understanding of effective storytelling appears limited."
X has responded to criticism by attaching a community note to @jujutsunokaisen's post. This note clarifies that the project is not officially endorsed and includes artwork that has been traced and may have been created using AI.
The individual responsible for the alternative ending is undeterred, proclaiming, "I find inspiration in your critical feedback, for the majority of endeavors of this nature initially encounter disapproval. Anticipate the complete chapter featuring revised dialogue. Bear in mind, one should never assess a tome based solely on its exterior."
The world of Jujutsu Kaisen is facing a shake-up, not from its creator Gege Akutami, but from its fans. With the manga officially concluding in September 2024, a group of dedicated readers are taking it upon themselves to craft an alternate ending.
This isn't a new phenomenon; Attack on Titan saw a similar fan-driven project after its finale. However, the Jujutsu Kaisen endeavor is facing heavy criticism. Fans allege plagiarism and the use of AI in the creation of this new ending, sparking controversy within the community. While Akutami's official ending initially divided readers, many have come to appreciate the author's original vision for the series.
