The streaming platform has ordered a pilot episode for the new series, which will offer a fresh take on the original story.
The reimagined series will center on a teenage girl who is sent to a detention camp where she, along with other campers, is forced to dig holes under the supervision of a harsh warden. The series will maintain the mystery of the original novel while introducing new dynamics with its lead character.
Liz Phang, known for her work on Yellowjackets and The Haunting of Hill House, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Alina Mankin, who has worked on Katy Keene and Lodge 49, will be the writer and also an executive producer. Additional executive producers include Drew Goddard, Sarah Esberg, Andrea Massaro, and Mike Medavoy. The pilot will be produced by Walden Media, the same company behind the 2003 film adaptation.
In the original Holes, the story follows Stanley Yelnats, a teenage boy wrongly sent to Camp Green Lake, a Texas correctional facility where inmates dig holes as punishment. The novel explores Stanley's connection to his ancestors, including a supposed family curse, and features an ensemble cast of characters whose fates intertwine across time.
The upcoming Holes series is part of Disney+'s growing lineup of reboots and spin-offs, which also includes the Wizards of Waverly Place spin-off Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, an animated Night at the Museum reboot, and the return of Malcolm in the Middle with a new four-episode revival.
