This very darkness is deemed such a significant threat that the gods sacrifice themselves to the First Flame, prolonging the "Age of Fire" to stave off its encroaching influence.
Humanity is thus deceived into perpetually "linking the fire," perpetuating an endless cycle of power and subservience to the gods. Even if players choose to usher in the "Age of Dark," the flame is ultimately rekindled by another. This choice appears to be a mere illusion, trapping humanity in an inescapable loop.
A Glimmer of Hope in the Gloom
Despite darkness being intrinsic to human nature in this world, Dark Souls offers glimmers of hope through the narratives of heroes willing to confront adversity and strive for something more. One of the most poignant figures is Lucatiel of Mirrah.
Initially, Lucatiel is reserved and distant toward those who venture into Drangleic. However, as players journey alongside her, they discover a kind soul beneath her armor and stoic mask. Yet, her fate is not without tragedy: Lucatiel gradually succumbs to memory loss due to the undead curse. She forgets her purpose in Drangleic and becomes weary of her predetermined destiny.
Nevertheless, before departing the world, Lucatiel simply asks that her name be remembered. A simple yet profound request in this desolate land. Lucatiel's mask reappears in Dark Souls 3, carrying the tale of her determination to preserve her identity through this final plea.
"Dark Soul" – A Benevolent Gift, Not a Curse
The darkness in Dark Souls can be interpreted as humanity's primal instincts and untamed nature. However, the story of the Furtive Pygmy offers a drastically different perspective. While the gods clung to their souls to attain godhood, the Furtive Pygmy fragmented his own soul to create humanity, sharing this gift with all.
Darkness is not inherently malevolent but rather a safe haven, promising a future of equality. However, in the eyes of Gwyn and the other gods, darkness becomes a threat to their golden age.
Unity – The Core Message of Dark Souls
Beyond the narrative, the spirit of optimism is also conveyed through the game's mechanics. Messages left by other players often provide assistance, such as revealing hidden walls, guiding players across invisible bridges, or offering words of encouragement during challenging moments.
Furthermore, the cooperative gameplay via summoning allows players to enter each other's worlds to offer aid, much like Lucatiel's assistance to the player throughout their journey.
The Journey Matters More Than the Destination
Although Dark Souls may evoke a sense that all choices are ultimately futile, it is the smaller moments, such as aiding Lucatiel or cooperating with other players, that resonate more deeply than simply claiming the throne. This is the overarching message of Dark Souls: human connection is what truly matters.
Dark Souls is not merely a dark journey but also a reminder that, even amidst the encroaching shadows, there are always lights of hope, kindled by human connection.
