Blade first look: Marvel offers unexpected glimpse"

While Blade technically entered the MCU on Sunday, it was only as a fleeting glimpse within an alternate reality.

The Disney+ animated series What If…? concluded this weekend with a montage of fresh and familiar variant characters. This included a version of Blade as Moon Knight, set to appear in the upcoming animated series Marvel Zombies.

Over the past three years, What If…? has presented fans with captivating variations of Marvel characters. Despite Sunday's episode marking the series finale, it concluded by showcasing the vast realm of untapped possibilities. This included a glimpse of Blade, the vampire hunter, assuming the mantle of Moon Knight, the Fist of Khonshu. This design, first revealed in October during Marvel Studios' preview of upcoming streaming shows, is not merely a fleeting concept. A clip from Marvel Zombies shows Blade as Moon Knight, adorned in a white cape, slashing through the undead.

Among the over 20 characters featured in the ending montage, Blade-as-Moon Knight appears to be the only one confirmed for a future MCU production. Three characters previously seen in the Apple Vision Pro VR story What If…? An Immersive Story were also shown: a young Hela wielding Mjolnir, The Infinity Witch, and Nova Centurion Carol Danvers. However, Marvel retains the freedom to discard or incorporate any of these ideas into future projects, highlighting the inherent appeal of the What If…? series.

Marvel Zombies is a spinoff of What If…?, revisiting a setting from Season 1. As a miniseries, it is unlikely to have multiple seasons. It draws inspiration from the Marvel Comics series of the same name, which debuted in 2005. This Blade-Moon Knight hybrid is a novel concept, and the voice actor for the role remains undisclosed.

MCU fans are acquainted with Moon Knight, a mercenary named Marc Spector with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) empowered by an Egyptian god to pursue justice, portrayed by Oscar Isaac in the 2022 live-action miniseries. Blade, a human-vampire hybrid who hunts vampires to safeguard humans, is also a familiar figure. While portrayed by Wesley Snipes in a successful film trilogy from 1998 to 2004, he has yet to appear in the MCU.

How Marvel Zombies will blend the backstories, strengths, and weaknesses of these two characters remains to be seen. Fans are intrigued by the implications of Khonshu choosing Marc Spector due to his impending death, while Blade possesses a degree of undeath as a vampire hybrid. Many anticipate a comprehensive explanation of this new hero when Marvel Zombies premieres in October 2025. What If…? is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
