Barbra Streisand and the SNL impersonation she couldn’t ignore
During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Saturday Night Live alum Laraine Newman shared an interesting encounter with Barbra Streisand regarding her SNL impersonation.
When Cohen asked if any celebrities had ever confronted her about an impression, Newman quickly responded, “Barbra Streisand.” Newman, who was part of SNL’s original cast from 1975 to 1980, famously portrayed Streisand in a sketch that humorously exaggerated the singer’s ego and salary demands. The skit featured a song titled Me, written by SNL writer Marilyn Miller, which included lyrics like: Even if one of my films sucks, it still makes 4 million bucks for me.
Though Streisand hadn’t seen the sketch at the time, she later approached Newman at a bar mitzvah where the singer was performing. “She came up to me and said, ‘I wanna talk to you,’” Newman recalled. However, she didn’t elaborate on what was discussed, leaving fans curious about what Streisand may have thought of the impersonation.
